Root is a game of adventure and war in which 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the 'Riverfolk' expansion) players battle for control of a vast wilderness.
The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance's hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods.
Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.
Root represents the next step in our development of asymmetric design. Like Vast: The Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique capabilities and a different victory condition. Now, with the aid of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible.
The Cats play a game of engine building and logistics while attempting to police the vast wilderness. By collecting Wood they are able to produce workshops, lumber mills, and barracks. They win by building new buildings and crafts.
The Eyrie musters their hawks to take back the Woods. They must capture as much territory as possible and build roosts before they collapse back into squabbling.
The Alliance hides in the shadows, recruiting forces and hatching conspiracies. They begin slowly and build towards a dramatic late-game presence--but only if they can manage to keep the other players in check.
Meanwhile, the Vagabond plays all sides of the conflict for their own gain, while hiding a mysterious quest. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your hidden goal.

Root: The Underworld Expansion
The Underworld Expansion includes:
- The Great Underground Duchy: an imperial faction that mixes the flexibility of the Marquise with the escalating Eyrie Dynasties.
- The Corvid Conspiracy: a secretive faction that hatches plots directly into the hands of their opponents.
- Two new maps: dig tunnels on the mountain map or fight to control the ferry on the lake map.
Root: The Clockwork Expansion
Root: The Clockwork Expansion allows players to square off against four fiendishly automated factions. Insert a faction to round out a low-player count game or team up for co-operative play! Compete against the:
- Mechanical Marquise 2.0 - Dodge her marauding patrols as you try to stop her from completing her building tracks.
- Electric Eyrie: Shore up the Woodland's defenses against this fearsome invader. If they go unchallenged, the Woodland will soon be flooded with their forces.
- Automated Alliance - Police these radicals and raze their bases before a little uprising turns into a massive rebellion.
- Vagabot - Hunt the dastardly Vagabot across the many clearings of the game or attempt to court him with items.
Root: The Clockwork Expansion 2
Root: The Clockwork Expansion 2 adds four new automated opponents. Compete against the:
- Logical Lizards
- Riverfolk Robots
- Cogwheel Corvids
- Drillbit Duchy
Also, it contains new trait cards to spice up the factions from the first Clockwork expansion. To use this product, you must have the Underworld and/or Riverfolk Expansions.
Electric Eyrie board with fixed rules is included as well.
Root: The Marauder Expansion
Root: The Marauder Expansion introduces two new factions and new gameplay options:
- Lord of the Hundreds is both charismatic and terrifying. He rules over a vast horde of warriors recently arrived to the woodland and is interested only in its domination. To help speed his conquest, he lights massive fires which can spread throughout the woods and destroy the buildings of other factions. The Lord also interacts with crafted items, which he can plunder from players. These items increase his strength, but also cause him to develop an increasingly fearsome monomania.
- The Keepers in Iron are strangers to the Woodland, here only to recover the scattered and lost relics of an ancient civilization. The Keepers work to establish way-stations across the woodland and form alliances with other factions in hopes of recovering their relics more quickly. They will often find themselves deep within enemy territory as they search for their relics. Thankfully their finely crafted armor makes them difficult to dislodge.
Both of these factions are suitable to Root's two-player game, bringing the total number of two-player factions up to five without the use of bots. Root: The Marauder Expansion also introduces a new level to the conflict for the woodland: Hirelings! These small factions can be used at any player count and introduce surprising new power combinations as well as a chess-like tension to lower player count games of Root. Finally, The Marauder Expansion also includes a new set-up draft system suitable for both casual and competitive play.
Root Partisans & Exiles Deck
Mix things up with an alternative deck of cards. This deck replaces the old deck and contains a fresh roster of special powers for players to craft, many based on the factions themselves. Frustrated by the Woodland Alliance's guerrilla tactics? Develop the ability to fight in the shadows yourself! But, be careful, many new powers come with new vulnerabilities.
